Case studies

In order to guarantee application-oriented transnational research, the work described above will be carried out in four regional case studies.

Case study 1: Austria

The rational of choice was to select test sites that serve as typical mountain catchments with respect to the methods to be applied in order to compile risk maps.

Case study 2: Lower Thames, England

This case study will investigate the issues involved in managing flood risk in a large urbanised area in the lower part of the River Thames catchment, London.

Case study 3: Mulde, Germany

The rationale of choice was to select test sites that serve as a typical lowland/highland river catchment with respect to the methods to be applied. The Vereinigte Mulde, a tributary to the Elbe, meets these criteria and was heavily affected by the flood in August 2002, causing high damages in many towns and villages along the river like Eilenburg and Grimma

Case study 4: Bavaria, Germany

The rationale of choice for the Bavarian case study was to select test sites that serve as typical alpine upland catchments to the methods to be applied in order to compile risk maps. The rivers Vils and Rott meet these criteria.

Case study 5: France

The rationale of french case study is somewhat different then the previous ones, since it is mostly considered with hazard and risk maps in a more general sense.
